Lately, I've observed people wanting to become more culturally astute and the publishing world is stepping up to the task. Back when you and I first began our journeys we didn't have books on how to get along in our new expat lifestyle. I thought you expats might want to know about some resources to check out when more guidance for your gypsy lifestyle begs help. What a better way to get the scoop than while learning something about culture with a cup of freshly-brewed coffee. I'll tell you more in a bit.
First off, if you're looking for the latest in customs and etiquette in your resident country, go to: http://www.culturesmartconsulting.com. There, you can peruse the many business briefings and other culture smart information by a company focused on transitions and easy-to-use books in getting around without making gaffes.
Actually, the books are produced by http://www.kuperard.co.uk and they may need your expertise to write a book about the country you live in. As an example, if you need the one on Turkey, written by Charlotte McPherson, you can pick it up at the Greenhouse in Kadikoy. She gives you the short version of what to expect and what to do based on her 30 years of living and working in Turkey.
You can, also, visit http://www.expatentrepreneurs.com and talk to Jo Parfitt because she needs a bunch of writers right now to write on different countries. She, too, has led the expat life for years now and created a whole business around it.
Two more things I want to mention before I get to coffee is about a new English daily newspaper for Turkey, Today's Zaman, and a newly published book by a writer for Lonely Planet travel books.
Today's Zaman is actually now the third English daily to keep us informed about the latest in Turkey. Its tagline is "Your Way of Understanding Turkey" and hopes to convey Turkey's realities to the world. Its an interesting newspaper with lots of diverse articles on topics of full-page length. While I am a fan of the New Anatolian which is still a fairly new publication, I think Today's Zaman will offer something different to the discerning reader, not to mention, Charlotte will have a feature four days a week. Check it out at http://www.todayszaman.com or www.sundayszaman.com.
Pat Yale of Lonely Planet fame has just published A Handbook for Living in Turkey. To quote their description of the book: It unravels the mysteries of being a foreign resident…navigate the Turkish education system…and examines daily life…with practical ideas, word lists… (and many other resources). Well, Pat, you beat me to it. Congratulations!
Now for the coffee lover in you. You can pick up Pat and Charlotte's books at the Greenhouse in Kadikoy on January 27th between 1400 and 1530 hrs. when you attend a seminar all about coffee with free tasting. Barbara Linde will show you how to grind beans, demonstrate the use of French Presses for a great cup of coffee, and the various types of coffee, so you understand the difference between them.
The seminar is free but you must reserve a place; so, call now at 0216 550 49 61 or 0533 715 0822 or Email: serakitapevi@superonline.com.
